In rooms where space is at a premium, it’s nice to be able to combine two pieces of furniture into one. A bench-style laundry hamper that doubles as a seat does exactly that. Perfect for small bathrooms, bedrooms or hallways. As a bonus, some are actually quite attractive.

A reader asked me about wall mounted laundry hampers, and I have to admit I had never heard of them. I did a bit of research, but all I could find was a sort of laundry bag that can stick to the wall with a suction cup. It is in the same style as hanging laundry hampers, designed to hang in a closet.

A laundry hamper is not usually much to look at. It’s something piratical rather than decorative. But there are some cool hampers out there, like zebra print hampers. They are great for kids who love animals, or even for adults who have a black and white color scheme in their bedrooms.

Pull out laundry hampers are set on rails and can be pulled out from under a cabinet. Some are made of cloth, some are metal baskets, and some are plastic. Most of them offer the convenience of being able to simply remove the hamper, so they can be easily taken to the laundry room. A variation of the pull-out system is the tilt-out design.

In a small room like a dorm room, a laundry hamper should ideally not take up too much space. A few space-saving designs are available: Some hampers are foldable, so that they take up very little space, but this is only true when the hamper is empty. In the same vein, mesh pop-up collapsible hampers fold onto themselves. There are hampers made to fit in corners, some that hang, and some that are simply small or have a slim profile.
